CONTAINER CHARACTERISTICS

To streamline the loading and unloading process of transported materials, as well as to reduce losses during transport due to breakage, deterioration, and theft, containers were developed. Containers are large boxes constructed of steel, aluminum, and/or fiberglass; they are resistant, easy to handle, and serve to store goods for transport, thus avoiding operational and financial losses.

Each container bears the owner’s mark, place of registration, number, size, type, space definition, and the maximum weight it can hold.

Containers are modular, and 20′ containers are considered 1 module, denominated TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit), serving as the standard for defining the size of container ships.

Over the years, due to market needs, different types of containers have emerged, such as: Standard, Refrigerated, Ventilated, Open Top, etc., according to the models and characteristics below:

Usage: For cargos with small density, in which the volume exceeds the weight by much (low weight/volume ratio). Containers with the same width and length as a 40′ container, but with 1 additional foot in height, increasing the internal volume by 13%, which in certain cases may result in considerable cost reduction. Cargo examples: clothing, tobacco, cigarettes, toys, furniture, etc.

Usage: Highly separated and refrigerated by cold circulating air according to the temperature control. Similar to refrigerated containers. The difference is that insulated containers depend on a clip-on to operate (refrigeration machine that is coupled to insulated containers). The new clip-ons use HFC-134A gas, which does not affect the ozone layer and have a higher efficiency level.

Usage: for perishable cargo that requires air renovation to preserve its characteristics. The fans create a type of chimney effect, which sucks the fresh air from the lower ventilation and exhausts the saturated air from the top, preserving the quality of the cargo.
